Daring. Consequential. Fun. These three words are just some of the onslought of comments we’ve received praising our design for this full renovation. The program includes new office spaces, an iconic tower bay window, a new heating system, landscaping and a beautiful exterior stairway. The project demanded a strong yet subtle architecture due to its location at the gateway to Lake Tahoe. As the headquarters of one of Lake Tahoe’s leading architecture and engineering firms, the design incorporates materials, forms, and details that are derived from the three disciplines practiced within its black-painted, and corrugated steel walls.
PRESS RELEASE
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) -Nevada Chapter held its biannual design award gala in Reno last month. Tahoe City design and engineering firm, Gary Davis Group received an award for “excellence” for their recent renovation and addition to the Gary Davis Building located at Tahoe City’s “wye”. While most award-winning firms/projects were given to the Las Vegas region, the Group’s designer, Tahoe City local Todd Mather, Associate AIA, was among only three northern Nevada designers or firms to receive this distinguished award.
Four acclaimed architects from the western-mountain region juried the competition which lasted two days. Of the Gary Davis Building renovation, jury chair Ted Lunas, AIA, stated during the award presentation that the design was a “redemption from past architectural transgressions” and lauded the project, too, for its “multiple play (and nice use) of materials.”
Mather describes the project: “A bold impression is achieved by a towering glass-and steel- clad bay window; perhaps a welcoming sight to the throngs of San Francisco Bayarea visitors fleeing to this mountainous area each weekend. Nodding to the building’s unique angles, two new walls slope outward from the building’s perimeter to its fascia achieving maximum rentable area while retaining its already-maximized footprint. New and old volumes are clad in three low-maintenance materials alluding to the three disciplines of the primary occupant, a design, civil and structural engineering firm: corrugated Cor-ten steel, steel sheet pile, and fiber cement lap siding. Steel siding wraps the new additions and defines the complex building shape. Careful locating of textured skins reveals the structure’s three distinct alignments.” Local businessman Glenn Campbell of the Dam Café proudly states the design is “consequential” to Tahoe City and its entry corridor.
The AIA-Nevada Design Awards are presented to architects or AIA-Nevada-affiliated firms or individuals for projects they have designed anywhere in the world. Conversely, if an architect is from out-of-state but the design in located in Nevada, it is eligible. Entries had to have been completed since January 1, 2000. The Gary Davis Building will be one of several Nevada design award recipients featured in the 2005 National AIA Convention held in Las Vegas in the spring.
